Application Steps

  1. During a call: submit interest application

  2. After a call closes: receive email response with confirmation of which of your preferred weeks is open or an offer for an alternative if neither. I'll ask that you let me know what amount on the sliding scale works for you right now and send a non-refundable fee invoice to hold your position.
If you need to cancel more than 30 days before your confirmed residency week, you will be able to transfer your payment to a future stay, pending availability and rescheduling a maximum of one time. If you need to cancel less than 30 days before your confirmed residency week, your fee cannot be refunded.
A Sunday to Saturday week: Single occupancy room $250-$400 || Double occupancy room $350-$500

  3. A couple of weeks before your stay: a reminder of this page is sent with the opportunity to check in on any other questions, to confirm your ferry times and coordinate pick-up as necessary

Planning

  • You are sharing one house with the residency at least two other artists. While your work and time is your own to direct and plan, there is plenty of opportunity to connect at meal times with the other artists as much or as little as you choose.

  • There are details on the spaces on our About page, guests are selected in an attempt to avoid significant overlap on the need for a single space based on the project description in your application. If two artists require the same space, the sharing schedule is coordinated together once on site.

  • There is wifi on the property, the cellular network is functional for video calls but can be unpredictable.

  • Bedding and towels are provided. Toiletries are not.

  • Good layers and house-slippers are smart packing decisions, especially in the colder/wetter months.

  • Pack a flashlight or headlamp.

  • Water reduction is a priority. For example, access to the laundry room in the house is not provided since your stay is only one week and water conservation is a consideration on the island.

  • Food is DIY. The kitchen is stocked up with tools and some basics like spices, olive oil, and a few condiments.

  • Galiano has a couple of basic stores for groceries and supplies, a gas station, and restaurants that are many in the summer and very few in the winter.

  • Workspaces are DIY. It is expected that you will be bringing your specialized equipment and tools with you, the work spaces are kept basic and flexible. One common request that we hope to answer yes to one day: there is not a piano on site.

  • Note, smoking is prohibited on the property in consideration of other artists in residence and the extreme fire risks of the summer months.

  • Other guests are generally not allowed, again, in consideration of the other artists in residence and to honour the creative working environment.

ARRIVING

  • The address is 415 Winstanley Road, Galiano Island

  • Check-in: You can arrive any time or day on or after Sunday morning's ferry.

  • Check-out: You can depart any time or day on or before Saturday morning's ferry (there is no late check-out option). If you are staying longer to enjoy the island, check-out is at 10:00 am.

  • The residency host (Dayna) is on the property with you on Sundays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

  • If you are coming from Vancouver (Tsawwassen terminal) we highly recommend reserving your ferries to and from Galiano Island (Studies Bay terminal) in advance. If you are coming from Vancouver Island (Swartz Bay terminal) you cannot reserve those routes but they are less busy.

  • If you are flying to Vancouver or Victoria leave a lot of time between the scheduled flight arrival and the scheduled ferry departure - with the ferries as infrequent as they are it doesn’t take much delay on the airline side to end up stuck in the wrong city for a night.

  • If driving you’ll come up the long driveway, past the black buildings to the house at the top of the hill, and will likely be asked to park in line with the lower deck.

  • If you are walking on, the host can pick you up and drop you off. This is only possible when you arrive Sunday and depart Friday or Saturday.

  • Upon arrival, the host will give you a tour, show you your room and workspace, and let you know the basics of how to care for the house while working here. More or less, it’s all just about tidying up after yourself and keeping food in the kitchen area only.

  • The well water is potable in the house but water conservation is critical.

  • There are a few opportunities to connect with our friends at Yellowhouse Arts Centre. They have an open studio for visual artists on Tuesdays, youth workshops on Fridays, and are always interested in guest instructors if you want to spend any of your time sharing. During the warmer months, the Yellowhouse also puts on events and concerts. If you are interested in any of their programs, an introduction can be made.
